Steady Ground

A short, stabilizing movement practice
2

Today’s practice is a 10-minute gentle movement practice with a focus on stability and grounding. You will need a spot on the floor where you can stand, sit and recline comfortably. As always, you can grab some pillows, blankets or any other props you like using.

I haven’t received a newsletter in months that hasn’t— like this one—started with a somewhat futile attempt to acknowledge all the things

The starvation in Gaza, the absurd, yet terrifying news coming out of the White House, the wildfires and the floods.

I tend to find looking at things head on preferable so all this willingness to name things for what they are feels pretty refreshing to me.

Even so, it’s important to acknowledge the overwhelm many of us are experiencing in response to the onslaught of news, commentary and even lovely supportive apocalypse essays.

Yes, keeping abreast of things and naming them honestly, not to mention taking action, can be a huge source of relief and connection with others.

It’s also important to regularly orient towards the here and now, to what feels solid and real in this very moment. To literally find steady ground.

This floor. This wooden table. This tree.

A fantastic teacher I’ve worked with, Carmen Spagnola, has said that absurdity is a hallmark of systems collapse. I find this helpful to remember when I feel disoriented by life as dystopian satire. When things are so bad they’re ridiculous, it’s important to ground ourselves in some way, so we can orient towards the sanity and wellness that continues to exist, amidst the chaos.

As ever, I have no quick-fixes on offer. Just ideas to share and a tremendous willingness to keep showing up, together with you.

Short somatic yoga practices + topical notes for midlife women delivered weekly! All content is offered freely. While paid subscriptions are on (I truly appreciate financial support for this work) I’m choosing not to paywall any content. There are lots ways to interact with and support Fire Season. Besides paid subscriptions, you can “heart” my posts, share them with others and leave comments. Thank you for being here.
